The sexiness coefficient of the league has just dipped dramatically with Paulo Sousa’s sacking at Leicester. Down deep in the table, unable to string anything tangible together, some think the diamond Portugeezer shouldn’t be the only alien deported back from whence they came. More on the fiery Scot occupying the hot seat below, now it’s round 10 prognostications unveiled:

Pressure mounts on Gordon Strachan; he has no idea what’s wrong, and no clue how to fix it. Knives have been unsheathed again after a miserable trip to Watford and Derby, completely eradicating any momentum garnered by the home gains of two weeks ago. It’s prompted a chance to elucidate some feelings, to really convey one’s thoughts surrounding this soon to be one year anniversary of an Irn-Bru revolution…

Mogga doesn’t want the poisoned chalice, so who is in the frame if Gordo is told to do one? Phil Brown? Martin O’Neill? If the gamble on immediate promotion is as serious as the dosh dossier suggests, it must be someone skilled at getting out of this league. Who else fits the bill?

With midseason transfer business usually dragging until the end of the term, the club endeavour to continue vetting targets. Lately we’ve heard Leon Best from Coventry – scorer of a wonder goal v Pompey in their FA Cup replay earlier this week – and Wes Hoolahan of Norwich, an assiduous winger, ideal as a replacement for Adam Johnson should he naff off to Sunderland or Everton. Throw in a spot of QPR’s Wayne Routledge and you have enough chum to hold the baying mob, temporarily at least. Though descriptions of old Wayne as a ‘combo midfielder who can play upfront’ invoke inherent hatred derived from similar failed experiments – see exhibits Aliadiere, Emnes, and/or Tuncay.

Collectively, it’s enough to stimulate hope. There’s a distinct outline in the new vision – more spine, steel, focus, and discipline – less faffing about w/ pretty passing and precision movement, because we simply haven’t the resources or personnel to implement it. And Gordon Strachan keeps getting managerial work not just for his acerbic wit, but because his austere system that emphasises grinding and plodding and fighting really does work.

The existing deficiencies were again magnified in the loss to Barnsley 2-1. Boro negotiated suspensions and injuries to field another disparate side: Jonathan Franks on the wide right of a previously little used, though historically Strachan-favoured 4-5-1 -Marcus Bent foundered alone up front – Arca was in over Yeates again – Hoyte dallied some more on the left, ahead of 3 relatively well compensated and rested recognized left-backs. Never mind that the former Arsenal man and drafted replacement for Luke Young provided the opening goal – a benign cross cum shot from 35 yards out, adamantly labeled by the under-achiever as intentional. The visitors, heartened by the jovial and voluble traveling supporters, excelled early on and bossed it. Barnsley regrouped after the break, as is their wont, and changed shape to create 2 goals that changed the course and rendered Boro craven again. Mark Robins is starting to harness and conjure some of that old Oakwell magic – the Tykes now rest 15^th in the table on 30 points, but w/ two massive games in hand. Capitalise on those and we’ll have a new entrant into the playoff discussion…

League duties take a back seat this weekend – Manchester Cini and their bespoke new gaffer bring the quarter-billion pound novelty – and possibly future relegated step-child – to the Riverside for the FA Cup. And it’s on the telly proper!
