It feels too disingenuous; trying to craft a retroactive relevant lead to the Palace match contravenes the spirit of the post match fag. Like the bird pointed out today during our latest mid-thirties meltdown, life happens. Laptops die, dreams of long-awaited trips abroad are dashed, and immediate – well, within six hours…okay, twelve – summaries of Boro match experiences suffer the most, Not that they need the corrosive fuel. Here’s the result of someone juggling tea, fags, live blogs, croissants, social media facilitators, crude notes, and a delayed feed from BBC Radio Tees…

Boro make one enforced change: Steele, McMahon, Bates, Hines, Bennett, Franks, Bailey, Arca, Taylor, Boyd, Lita. Subs: Ripley, Haas, McDonald, Halliday, Grounds, Smallwood, Park

Pre-match niceties with Mogga: on the progress of Merouane Zemmama – ‘he’s in a post office in Marrakesh probably’

Jonathan Franks in for Marvin Emnes (groin), who failed a late fitness test

35 played in this series – Boro: 13W 9D 13L

1st half

Dougie Freedman is still searching for first win. He’s been permanent for a month, fostering a stingy defence that hasn’t conceded at home since 09 Nov 10. His number two Lennie Lawrence shared a few hearty moments with Mogga pre-match

Jason Steele and Joe Bennett get the call for the England U21 match in Empoli against the Italians

Julian Speroni – looks a bit gruff…and heavy…’you sound like Brucie’ quips Gary Gill

Arca the, ahem, Arcatect

Ref – Roger East (Wiltshire)

Matthew Bates off with hamstring knack after 22 minutes. Jonathan Grounds comes on, leaving Maxi Haas to still wait for his English debut. Crutches for the captain? Nah, he’s proper hard…

Macca took the armband after Bates exit

Boro looking to score in 9th consecutive league match

More poor composure from Leroy Lita…had Speroni committed and scuffed his shot

Anthony Gardner having a Kalifa Cisse-esque shocker

Dean Moxey the standout Palace man so far. A cracking piece of late transfer business from the looks of it…he’s the standout presence in this Palace side looking to close the gap between them and their current opponents

‘A catalogue of errors’ leads to Palace’s opener – awful play from Seb Hines…goal claimed by James Vaughan…Palace 1-0

HT Palace 1-0 Boro

Loads of possession for us, with no end product. Arca has been masterful, completing at least as many passes as the hosts combined. Bates exit has really had an impact. Hines shocking during the concession of the goal – Vaughan outmuscled the young centre back entirely too easily. Get your head on son and repay the favour this half…

Scott McDonald can change the shape for us – he can get forward and profit from the fruitful passes Arca and Bailey are offering

2nd half

Franks off – Cameron Park on

The strikers must be strong, getting the ball to stick…keep possession and be stronger

Darren Ambrose denied a chance to possibly kill it off…great save Steele

Boyd off – McDonald on, vociferously

15 mis left – no subs left to reshuffle – who will conjure up the magic to get us something

Att – 14060 (1315 Boro)

Hines heads up front for a last roll of the dice…with Boyd off there’s a decided lack of height in the attack…

GG MOM – Arca

FT Palace 1-0 Boro

One mistake punished us, though to be fair they could have had 2 or 3. We dominated possession and did fuck all with it; not a good sign to do this away against a team below you. Boro’s glaring, flagrant lack of presence in the Palace penalty box ensured we wouldn’t be a threat. Confidence waned as the match progressed. And once Bates left the spirit disappeared entirely

4 points from 9 – simply not a good enough return against teams in the bottom three. Obviously the Preston lapse set the tone for this critical run

Fans openly questioning transfer window logic – £2m wasn’t enough for Lita? And why no reinvestment in the squad? Mogga’s admission that the club wanted, and needed, to move more players around in the transfer window will sting throughout May – summer will be the time for wide range perestroika

Tunnel reaction with Tony Mowbray: punished quite a bit for one mistake in this division – standards slipped – the squad didn’t succeed with the game plan in training, and it showed – Matthew Bates: hamstring injury confirmed ; less than ideal training conditions may have played a role – Grounds is better with ball at his left foot; he played well ahead of a potential English debut for Maximilian Haas – another day and it’s 0-0, no-one deserved to win the match – Cam Park; late call to plump for Franks after Emnes was ruled out; he came on because we needed a creative player on the pitch

Nicky Bailey needs consolation: disappointing end to a good run – got ‘caught up a little bit’ – ‘didn’t create enough or play well enough as a team’ – not trying to make excuses, but the wind ‘was everywhere’ and the pitch was ‘bubbly’

Julio Arca, Boro’s new best interview: too a nasty kick, leg is hurting – ‘we tried everything’, ‘couldn’t find the space’ – they waited for us to make a mistake, and apart from the goal they created nothing – ‘frustrating when you can’t break in’ – regarding Swansea, it could be better for us to play against a team that wants to play good football…slightly elitist eh, Julio?

Jones; Hoyte, Wheater, McManus, Taylor; Robson, O’Neil, Williams, Franks; McDonald, Killen

‘Cracking day for a match’ according to the broadcast team

Palace an old side – 5 players over age 30

Alan Lee opens the action on 5 minutes by smashing the post! The well-proportioned Irish striker – long a target in eyes of this blog – romps forward and cuts inside of Wheats to unleash a screamer that left Brad Jones flailing…

Boro fashion a lead out of nothing: Gary O’Neil is unlocked down the right channel by a terrific ball from Justin Hoyte – he squares the ball to Scott McDonald who taps it in – Boro 1-0 Palace

‘The intelligence of Gary O’Neil’ crafted that goal says GG…a real poacher’s finish…proper strikers goal

Time to raise the intensity after the goal – apply more pressure

Everyone has a hearty laugh at Jay O’Shea’s banana-like boots…ah, hazing the new fish

Great linkage between the midfield and attack, notably GON and Mac

Mark Drury checks in pitchside w/ the latest instructions from the gaffer: take on the fullbacks – Ertl is a centre back and Matt Lawrence just arrived – get wide and test them

AV confirmed the latest in a string of denied stonewall pens – Mac got to long ball over the top – Paddy McCarthy defends it sloppily, though not enough to stimulate referee Graham Salisbury…did he not see Paddy tugging him down?

Andrew Taylor limps off after re-aggravating one of his seemingly many maladies…Kyle Naughton replaces him on 42 minutes

Gordo remonstrating w/ the fourth official over the missed penalty call – the deep frustration surrenders to unlikely laughter

The comic relief is short-lived as Palace get an equalizer deep into stoppage time – Alan Lee operated freely on the left to pick out Alassane N’Diaye – the young Frenchman finished w/ a fancy header from 12 yards out – Boro 1-1 Palace

‘Poor goal…good header’ is the supposition from above

HT Boro 1-1 Palace

Poor time and manner in which to concede – forces us to do something creative in the second half

interval repast: tea/fags/Sports section of local rag

Gary Gill begs of Justin Hoyte: ‘have a bit more belief son…use your pace…’

Robbo tells everyone – probably in a menacing way – just calm down a little bit after a frantic spell

Attendance – 18,028 (459 from Croydon)

Palace defender Claude Davis suffers from karmic retribution after suspected hand ball and a terrible lumbering foul on Leroy Lita…Robbo poleaxing him moments later offers a measure of justice…Ali thinks it’ll ‘clear his head…when he finds it…’. Boom!

Jonathan Franks is a key ingredient in this Boro surge – he’s finding space down the left and working hard to provide good crosses – the peach he stood up at the back post for Mac – the header is looped over Julian Speroni and onto his net…later he switches up w/ substitute Jay O’Shea and buzzes down the right

Despite all the turmoil – remember, Palace would be battling w/ us for playoff positioning if not for their points deduction – the visitors lay claim to the 3rd best away record in the league…with a point already secured will they blag a win?

3 minutes added

GG MOM – Jonathan Franks

FT Boro 1-1 Crystal Palace

10 unbeaten at home, but ultimately not good enough – feels like a draw should: 2 points wasted instead of 1 gained

The body language of the players trudging off the pitch confirms as much – it wasn’t an overly-physical affair and the conditions were more than acceptable – this dejection comes from within the team

Paul Hart brought a resolute, compact, and organised side to our place…eerily similar to the Pompey match last spring when we desperately needed something then too…what ever could be the correlation?

Gordo has the last words: we lacked in bravery – mentally – not a strong enough performance – this he feels is the most dominant performance of since his arrival, inferring it to be better than Newcastle a few weeks back – quality and imagination were the key missing factors

If the sanctity of at least your afternoon doesn’t ride on this result then why bother paying attention? That sagacity courtesy of TheProphetBob – chatting on AVs live blog from Selhurst Park – for providing perspective as Boro endure a worryingly woeful slide whilst adjusting to the revised coaching cabal. Gordo, the players, the fans, all left to stew during the next two weeks sans matches – the 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace riddled w/ failed chances offering enough for a spell of advanced, intensive psychotherapy. The latest permutation of a strike force – Leroy Lita and Marcus Bent – misfired all day, shanking sitters and disregarding a litter of unmarked teammates queuing in front of the Palace goal.

This is from our tea-stained, yellowed-from-chain-fag-smoke handwritten notes:

Digard not even on the bench – Emnes being marginalized too – the jewels of the 2008 summer transfer window are fading from view

With so much of the offense channeled through Adam Johnson, how could we even envisage replacing him?

Danny Butterfield was churned often by Johnno – why didn’t we exploit him more after he picked up a booking?

Took some time for Isaiah Osbourne to get stuck in – much better in the 2nd half, winning balls and exerting more attacking pressure

That old whinger Warnock may be right when boasting of Julian Speroni as best keeper in the division

Gary Gill says get the ball to the strikers earlier and minimize the gap between midfield and the final third

4 on 1 – Leroy Lita had Johnno, Hoyte and Bent caterwauling for the ball, and he goes for glory and pisses all over the best chance of the match

More corner-related goal gifting: Palace pulsated into a counter attack, Hoyte couldn’t get a head to cross, ball falls for Ambrose…bang…down 1-0

Square-peggism – Arca on for Hoyte, Rhys Williams to right back, Gary O’Neil moves central, Arca back to the right flank

Jonathan Franks – on for Lita – spanks a great chance that was saved by Speroni

Frenetic finish in the 4 minutes of stoppage time, but Boro in the end cannot crack the Crystal Palace conundrum

Forest next on the 21st…

Change, not love, is exciting and new. Everyone in the Boro extended network is acclimatising to the new action-oriented approach to personnel dealings. Gone are the days of endless conjecture and pontification – Gordon Strachan operates like a thief in the night, undermining rumour mongers everywhere. Isaiah Osbourne is now in the fold through the end of the year on a 2 month loan from Aston Villa – he joins the midfield to add steal, and rob the opposition of possession. The new entry is expected to break into the starting XI for tomorrow’s clash w/ Crystal Palace. Gordo has been quick to address squad deficiencies in less than 2 weeks on the job, and until a unit steps forth to claim regular first-team positions we can expect a bit more turnover until a winning formula is uncovered. And we can’t even speculate on a starting line-up for tomorrow – more experimentation w/ his new play things, or a more rigid formation based on actual technical ability and experience in a dedicated role?

Whatever he may choose, it has to be good enough to produce a result as we endure another international break. There is nothing like extended idle time after a poor result to allow the savages to sharpen their sticks
